On 18th March, Northrop Grumman was awarded a contract worth €23.1 million ($30 million) to support the firm’s AN/ASQ-236 radar pod.
The AN/ASQ-236 pod contains a synthetic aperture radar and can be used to assist cartography, generate bomb damage assessments; and perform general day and night surveillance. The pod outfits the United States Air Force’s (USAF) Boeing/McDonnell Douglas F-15E Strike Eagle combat aircraft. Northrop Grumman was contracted by the Department of Defense to develop the radar in the late 1990s, with it entering service in 2009.
Several aspects of the radar, including the number in the USAF inventory, are classified. Moreover, the exact specifics of the work that Northrop Grumman will undertake on the pod have not been revealed, although the work is expected to be completed by March 2016.
