Gainfuls Gain Aspides

The Czech Republic plans to upgrade its 2K12 (NATO reporting name ‘SA-6 Gainful’) mobile SAM systems with new fire control systems and Alenia Aspide SAMs.

The Czech Air Force currently operates four batteries of 2K12 systems, alongside S-75 (NATO reporting name SA-2 Guideline) medium-range SAMs and Saab RBS-70 Short-Range Air Defence missiles. These systems are deployed with the 25th Air Defence Missile Brigade and the 26th Air Surveillance Brigade.

There is no word on which Aspide variant will equip the Czech SA-6s, although it is conceivable that they could be outfitted with the Aspide-2000 model.
